The United Stockholms of America project started as a commissioned photo assignment by Svenska Institutet (Swedish Institute in Sweden) with the intention to document the places in the United States of America that bares the same name as the capital of Sweden.
Between 1850-1930 1.3 million Swedes emigrated from Sweden to America. The exhibit and the book tells the stories of eight Stockholms, located in Maine, New York, New Jersey, Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Iowa and Texas, some named by the Swedes who came over the big ocean and decided to stay.
The photos were exhibited at the Swedish embassy in Washington D.C. The exhibition was a success and eventually toured to five different locations around the world before it was auctioned off for charity.
Thanks to the success of the exhibit Charlie Bennet decided to collect the photos and stories of the exhibit into a coffee tabled styled book, United Stockholms of America – The Swedes who stayed (Votum Publishing).
